Detailed description of Blue Mash Golf Club

Blue Mash Golf Club, is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Laytonsville, Maryland.

The Blue Mash Golf Course first opened for play in 2001. The par-71 course was designed by Arthur Hills.

Blue Mash Golf Course lies on land settled by freed slaves around the time of the Civil War. The low-lying, densely forested, marshy property with clay soils of blue, was aptly coined Blue Marsh, with the colloquial pronunciation of Marsh giving the area its present name. It was an "underground railroad" stop, as the original freed slave settlers used the natural cover to hide runaway slaves on their way north.

Centrally located in Montgomery County, MD, featurs a mix of open, wooded and water holes. With no forced carries it is entirely playable for all golfers, yet is still considered one of the toughest challenges in the region from the back tees, especially with the stronger than average winds that blow through this former farm. Since opening in 2001, the opening three holes have become almost legendary as the toughest opening stretch in the region, but good birdie opportunities are also possible starting with the short par 3 6th hole and including the driveable par-4 8th hole.

This golf course has it all: length, open holes, wooded holes, water holes, elevation changes and flat holes. As previously mentioned, it does not have one forced carry over a wetland, allowing the high handicap player to manage every hole. Blue Mash showcases Hills design style, especially his small, interesting greens that demand precision, as well as wide fairways, subtle contouring, and strategic requirements for every shot.

Blue Mash plays to 6,858 yards for a course rating of 73.3 and a slope rating of 133.

Blue Mash also offers a sprawling practice facility with over two acres of grass teeing area, practice bunkers and an enormous practice putting green; a beautiful clubhouse with a full service pro shop; and a covered patio with great golf course views.

This A. Hills design is as bad as it gets. The beautiful links course is ruined by undulating terrain just for the sake of undulating terrain. As such it is a target golf game where you play through the windmills and roll the ball through the clown's mouth. If your handicap is over 20, avoid this course at any price. Fairways and tee boxes are in excellent shape. The greens, not so much. The staff is as good as it gets! Great price did did not overcome the terrible design.

Great course and as the temp was 55 cost $55. First 3 holes as challenging as there are in the area especially if the wind is blowing. Play it regularly and recommend it to all.

A good thinking players layout with some challenging shots. Greens aren't the best I've played but they are true and better than fair. Some pretty holes I'd like to play again.

Played here 9-24-08 for $56 with the Tee Time book. Very good price for a high quality course in an up-market area.

Course opened in 2001, and has matured well: very nice condition across the board. Design is excellent, considering that there is no elevation change to speak of, and most holes are very "linksy." Back nine has lots of water, and the view from tee boxes can be intimidating, but the landing areas are usually pretty generous, although bunkers abound. Tee boxes are lage, and flat, with no crowns, a good thing in my book. Fairways are sculpted, some with significant mounding. Bunkers are plentiful, and will definitely influence shot selection. Greens are largish, and none are flat. I found them very challenging, but fair, with many very subtle breaks.

Two negatives: the course rating of 124 from the White tees seems way too low for the difficulty: I would think it to be more like 130. Second complaint: the scorecard provides zero help to the golfer - no hole or course layout, just blank squares on a piece of cardboard. Somewhat inconsistent with the upscale image the course seeks.

Clubhouse is not very attractive from the highway: looks like an old farmhouse with vinyl siding, however, it has all the amenities, just not the "look". Staff was top-notch: very helpful, welcoming, and professional.

Highly recommend this course.
